Goran Ivanisevic

Goran Ivanisevic - Wimbledon Champion 2001
Goran Ivanisevic was probably the most unlikely tennis player to become a Wimbledon Champion. But after gaining a wildcard for Wimbledon 2001, it seemed nothing could stop him! He was playing better than ever and had easily made it to the semi-finals.

After Pete Sampras was knocked out in the early rounds by up and coming Swiss tennis star Roger Federer, it seemed fairly obvious who was set to take the title. But, in a surprising outcome to the quarter finals, Roger Federer was beaten by the British number one, Tim Henman.

Tim Henman's defeat over Roger Federer meant he was set to play Goran Ivanisevic in the semi-finals. By the fourth set it seems liked it was all over after Tim Henman winning the last 2 sets: 7-6, 6-0. But Goran proved to be too strong for the brit and Tim Henman was knocked out after two great sets, leaving the final scores at:

Gentlemen's Singles - Semifinals - Centre Court

1 2 3 4 5
  Tim Henman: 5 7 6 6 3
  Goran Ivanisevic: 7 6 0 7 6

No one could predict the final that was to follow. It was one of the biggest and most exciting finals in Wimbledon's History between the Australian Pat Rafter and Croatian Goran Ivanisevic.

Sadly, for the millions of women clamouring for his attention after his emotional win, the handsome sports star, defeated in three previous Wimbledon finals, already had his beautiful long-term girlfriend - Croatian model Tatjana Dragovic - waiting nervously in the wings back home.
